Knoema Datasets and the Snowflake Data Marketplace Challenge

The Snowflake Data Marketplace Challenge is open. To win you need to come up with a creative answer to a question, by using data from the Snowflake Data Marketplace. Find here a highlight of the Knoema datasets in Snowflake, then join us in the challenge.

There are four questions that you could answer, each focusing on a different industry: financial services, healthcare, media & entertainment, and retail/CPG. For example, one of the questions is

“As a financial planner, your client has received a stipend of $1 million and has asked you to help them invest in foreign currency. Which currency would you choose and why?”

To answer this question, you should go to your Snowflake account (sign up for a free trial), and explore these Knoema datasets.

Knoema has collected thousands of different public datasets — and you can access them for free in Snowflake. When I say that Knoema has shared thousands of datasets, I really mean it. They are organized in categories like tourism, agriculture, forecasts, commodities, construction, trading, economy, environment, real estate, COVID-19, banking, transportation, and much more.

In order to answer the million dollar question, you need to figure out which datasets to use. Maybe start with the IMF forecasts for 2022, and with a SQL query you can find out which countries and regions are expected to exhibit the highest growth by October 2022:

The results say that the highest growth is projected in Asian countries like India and in the Southeast (ASEAN-5). Meanwhile the lowest growth is expected in countries like South Africa, Japan, and Germany.

This is just the beginning. There’s plenty more to find with Knoema. In fact, there are so many tables shared by Knoema that I started writing SQL queries to go over the INFORMATION_SCHEMA, to find out which of these tables might be the most interesting. I’ve shared some of these queries on Stack Overflow.

Now it’s your turn to start exploring the Snowflake Data Marketplace Challenge. Check out the rules and regulations of the challenge to see if you’re eligible to participate. And if not, that’s okay. You can still explore all of these datasets — and that’s the real reward.
